Frequently Asked Questions About Privately Hosted Murder Mystery Events

HOW MANY GUESTS ARE NEEDED FOR A PRIVATE EVENT?

A minimum of 8 guests is required for a successful Murder Mystery Private Performance. Fewer than 8 won’t meet the suspect role needs.

CAN WE HAVE A MYSTERY WITHOUT A MURDER?

Absolutely! The Murder Mystery Company has a theme called ‘Now You See It, Now You Don’t’, where the mystery involves a missing diamond. You and your guests will solve the crime without any murders involved!

CAN WE HAVE SHOWS WITH ALL MALE OR ALL FEMALE ROLES?

Yes, we offer the ‘Now You See It, Now You Don’t!’ theme, which can be adapted for all male or all female roles. For more information, refer to The Murder Mystery Company’s theme list.

HOW GRAPHIC IS YOUR CONTENT?

Our shows are all comedies and can be rated from G to R, based on your preference. The scripts do not include graphic, explicit, or derogatory content. An ‘R rating’ simply means additional comedic innuendo similar to what’s on shows like ‘The Simpsons’ or ‘Family Guy’. There’s no graphic content like blood or gore in our performances.

ARE YOUR SHOWS AGE-APPROPRIATE?

While our shows are comedic and avoid vulgar content, some themes might not be suitable for younger audiences. The Murder Mystery Company uses a rating system from G to R to help you choose the right theme. For questions, call 1-888-643-2583 (option 2 for Private Events) or email your crime scene consultant at crimesceneplanner@themurdermysterycompany.com.

DO YOU HAVE SHOWS FOR CHILDREN?

Yes! The Murder Mystery Company offers three themes that can be adapted for children’s parties or young audiences: ‘Crime and Punishment’, ‘Midnight at the Masquerade’, and ‘Now You See It, Now You Don’t’. For more information, call 1-888-643-2583 (option 2 for Private Events) or contact your crime scene consultant at crimesceneplanner@themurdermysterycompany.com.

HOW MANY SUSPECT ROLES ARE THERE?

Your guests will step into the spotlight with 8 to 12 suspect roles to play in your murder mystery performance. One lucky guest will be revealed as the killer by the end of the night! Plus, everyone gets to participate through themed groups like “Lexi Lady’s Fan Club” and “The Billionaire’s Club.”

CAN THE SHOW BE SHORTENED?

Yes, we can shorten the show to about 1 hour and 30 minutes if needed. This doesn’t include pre-show mingling or setup/cleanup. Please let us know at least 72 hours in advance if you require this adjustment.

ARE THE ACTORS FROM THE LOCAL AREA?

Yes, our actors are professional performers from your local Murder Mystery troupe. They are specially trained to deliver an outstanding experience. If you enjoy their performance, you can request the same actors for future events!

CAN WE ADD EXTRA ACTORS?

Yes, you can add more actors to your event. Notify your representative at least 72 hours before your performance date. Additional fees apply for extra actors.

DO YOU BRING THE MUSIC?

Yes, The Murder Mystery Company includes sound systems in our packages: The Perfect Crime (4 Actors), The Crime of The Century (6 Actors), and The Case of a Lifetime (8 Actors). Each theme has a custom soundtrack to enhance the show.

CAN WE USE THE VENUE'S SOUND SYSTEM?

If you would rather utilize your location's sound system, your actors can accommodate this request; however, this is not always the best option for your event, even if it seems like the easiest available solution. When using a venue location’s sound system:

  • Your actors will not be able to adjust the quality of the sound throughout the show. This will require a sound technician provided by the venue to operate the location’s sound system for the 2 hour show run time.
  • Your actors may be able to bring back-up microphones, or any other emergency sound equipment for correcting sound issues during the performance, however the equipment may not be interchangeable. Your venue’s sound technician should provide you with the sound equipment specs prior to your show date so that you may speak with the actors regarding any back up equipment.
  • Your actors may not be able to utilize their specialized theme soundtrack. Most venue locations are unable to accommodate our Company Ipods; however, if the venue location’s technician is willing to learn the sound cues, and can provide all needed conversion equipment to connect the Company Ipod into their sound system, then our actors will work with the sound technician.

WHAT SIZE SPACE DO YOU NEED?

We need a space roughly the size of a pool table (8 x 4 ft) for the performance, preferably in a central location. This allows our actors to engage with guests and make quick costume changes. Ideal locations include private dining rooms, living rooms, banquet halls, or conference rooms.

How do I make my final payment?

You have a couple of options when it comes to making your final payment for your performance; whichever option is most convenient for you and your event.

  • You can make your final payment by following the link in your initial booking email.
  • You can request to have the credit card that was utilized for your deposit payment charged for the remaining final payment balance.
  • You may pay your final payment the day of your show, once your actors arrive prior to the performance, via a credit card or check.

If you are booking an event for a University, or Government Agency, then your Representative can discuss other means of completing your deposit and final payment.

WHY SHOULDN'T MY PERFORMANCE BE A SURPRISE?

Letting your guests know about the murder mystery performance ahead of time is key for several reasons. It prepares everyone for the type of entertainment they'll experience and builds excitement and anticipation for their role in the show. Some guests might be shy about interactive performances, so giving them a heads-up ensures they won't be caught off guard, especially if they're chosen as a suspect. The fun and engagement of being in on the mystery from the start far outweigh any fleeting surprise moment.

WHO CAN I CONTACT FOR HELP?

For any questions or concerns, call us at 1-888-643-2583 (option 2 for Private Events) or email your crime scene consultant at crimesceneplanner@themurdermysterycompany.com.

WHEN WILL THE ACTORS ARRIVE?

Our actors typically arrive an hour before your guests to set up, get into costume, and handle any last-minute details. On the day of your event, they’ll call your primary contact number between noon and 3pm to confirm their arrival. If your event is scheduled earlier, they’ll call the evening before.

DO YOU BRING COSTUMES FOR EVERYONE?

We bring costume pieces for guests in primary suspect roles, like hats and feather boas, to help them fully embrace their characters. There won’t be full costumes provided for guests, but we encourage you to dress up for the theme and have fun with it.

WHAT PROPS ARE PROVIDED?

We supply a range of props for the featured suspect roles, including hats, wigs, glasses, and feather boas. Each suspect gets one prop piece to enhance their character, which is collected at the end of the show.

ARE AWARDS AND PRIZES INCLUDED?

Yes! We bring awards like 'The Detective of the Night Award' for the best detectives, 'The Best Actor' and 'The Best Actress' awards for outstanding performances, 'The Best Dressed Award' for top costumes, and the 'Dead Last Place Award' for the team that missed all the clues. Custom awards like 'Best Patsy Award' or 'Best Death Award' are also available. Keep the 'Dead Last Place Award' a surprise for extra laughs!

SHOULD WE DRESS IN COSTUME?

While not mandatory, dressing up is encouraged. Costumes enhance the experience and make the event more enjoyable for everyone.

WHAT DO YOU NEED FROM US ON SHOW DAY?

We need three things: a table or flat surface for props, a private area for costume changes, and a performance space at least the size of a pool table (8 x 4 ft). We’ll handle the rest!

HOW DOES THE SHOW WORK? WHAT CAN YOU EXPECT?

Your murder mystery show is divided into four segments:

  1. Setup: The actors arrive early to get into costume, set up props, and prepare the show materials. They place rule sheets, suspect notes, and MMC money on the tables. If a sound system is included, they’ll do a mic check as well.
  2. Pre-Show Mingle Time: As guests arrive, the actors mingle and explain the rules. They choose suspects from the guests and ensure everyone understands the game. A full explanation is given at the start for anyone who missed it.
  3. The Show: The performance, which lasts around 2 hours, is divided into 3 acts with 2 investigation periods. The murder happens in Act 1, the detective arrives in Act 2, and the mystery is solved in Act 3. Awards are handed out, and the killer is arrested at the end.
  4. Post-Show: After the show, actors are available for photos and questions before they clean up, pack up, and leave. If you’re providing food for them, this is the time to do it.

HOW DO YOU CHOOSE THE SUSPECTS?

Suspect roles can be assigned in two ways. If you have guests in mind who would love to be featured, just let your consultant know, and we'll make sure they get the perfect role. Alternatively, you can leave it to our actors to choose at random. During the pre-show mingle, actors will interact with guests to see who’s eager to join in and who might be a bit shy. Participation is always voluntary—no one will be forced to perform if they’re not comfortable.

HOW DO WE ORGANIZE TEAMS?

For smaller gatherings of up to 20 people, guests will solve the crime individually. For groups of 20-50, guests can team up in pairs or small groups of 5 to 10. We’ll provide everything they need, like pens and 'Suspect Note Sheets', to jot down clues and evidence. Throughout the evening, guests will gather clues during the acts and investigation times. Near the end, they’ll fill out 'Final Sentencing Sheets' to guess the murderer, the method, and the motive. The detective will then reveal which team got it right and unveil the killer!

WHO PLAYS THE VICTIM?

The victim role depends on the number of actors. With 1 actor, a guest is chosen (you can even request who). With 2 or more actors, one will play the victim and also act as the detective.

WHO’S THE MURDERER?

The identity of the killer is the night’s biggest twist! You won’t find out who the murderer is until the end when the detective reveals them. It’s up to you and your guests to use your detective skills to solve 'who-dun-it', how, and why. One clue: the killer will be among your guests playing suspect roles. Good luck!

HOW LONG DOES THE SHOW LAST?

A standard Murder Mystery Company event takes between 3-4 hours. Actors arrive an hour before your guests to set up and get into costume. The event begins with a 30-minute mingle as guests arrive, followed by a 2-hour show divided into three 30-minute acts with two 15-minute investigation intervals. After the show, actors need about 30 minutes to clean up.

WHAT’S THE IDEAL TABLE SETUP?

Arrange your tables to fit your space while ensuring guests can comfortably view and hear the performance. Our actors can adapt to your setup as long as they can move freely and engage with everyone. Tables should be spaced for easy interaction without hindering movement during the show.

CAN WE EAT WHILE THE SHOW IS HAPPENING?

Definitely! Our shows are designed to pair perfectly with dining, so eating during the performance is encouraged. We’ll help you create a timeline that integrates the meal and the show for a seamless evening.

WHAT DO GUESTS NEED?

We supply everything your guests will need: suspect note sheets, pens, clues, and final sentencing sheets. They just need to bring their enthusiasm and sharp detective skills. Get ready to crack the case and claim those bragging rights!

SHOULD WE TIP OR FEED THE ACTORS?

While not required, tipping or feeding the actors is a nice gesture. If they gave an exceptional performance, a tip of $20 to $50 each is appreciated. You can also offer them a meal after the show. Let the actors know when they arrive and check for any dietary restrictions.
